Learn things about social influences in education that you won't get in many other classes
Cons: Tons of writing
This class is amazing as is Dr. White. Her style of teaching is engaging and she definitely challenges your thinking, but she manages to push you without disrespecting where you are. I've never had as many a-ha moments as I did in this class. She's incredibly well read and intelligent and her class covers taxation, housing, healthcare, race and class all in a way that links them together and their influence on education. You will write a lot -- to be expected in a graduate class. She's laid back and always on hand to help -- very responsive -- but she's tough on writing. She allows students to rewrite their work without penalty if you take the first time around seriously. If you want a class that helps you understand why education is hard to reform and how social contexts play into the dynamics of schooling that we never address but hold schools accountable for, this is the class for you. The variety and scope of the content is challenging but soooo good.
